Why do sewer backups happen after a storm?
Sewer backups occur when the volume of water run-off from a storm is greater than a drainage system's capacity.
There are 2 ways water can enter your basement during and after heavy rain storms:
- During heavy rains, the water level rises in the sewer system which causes water to backflow through the sewer pipeline into your basement.
- Water can come into your basement after a heavy rain when the overland flow of storm water enters through an opening such as a door, window or cracks in your home’s foundation. (this doesn’t relate to sewer backups).
